I'm loving Keiichi Matsuda's work right now.

"Alternative realities surround us and present possible and impossible fantasies for purposes of information, advertising, glamorising, publicising, and propagating the ideals of capitalism through consumption. The mechanisms of addiction are at play.

Shop windows, billboards, magazines are portals to parallel universes. They set-dress our mundane world, and relieve us of the responsibility of the dream. The pusher shows us what our aspirations are, and shows us where to buy them.

Pranav Mistry says SixthSense software will be open source

The latest Ted talk about Media Lab's Sixth Sense this time by Pranav Mistry (you may have seen Pattie Maes talk about it just under a year ago). He says that the open-source software should be available next month and we can all build our own for around $300. The only problem is the geeky finger markers.

Yay!Everyday has so many quirky pieces of art, photography and shorts that I am still desperately trying to put a dent in it. There is enough quality stuff here to keep you busy for hours (or at least a solid 10 minutes), plus I have a soft spot for pseudo-vintage robots, so I couldn't resist.

GE created this really slick little Augmented Reality animation. It requires that you print out a "marker" pattern, but when you hold this printout in front of your webcam, the animation appears. The best part is the transition if you remove the paper really quickly, it folds up onto itself before it disappears. I recommend trying it. High on the cool factor, but definitely not useful in any way.

I came across this one a while back but it deserves to be seen. What I love most about it is the illusion of 3-dimensionality. I always think that playing with and manipulating physical elements creates the most interesting visuals.

Clive van Heerden was a speaker at the UID Spring Summit here in Umeå this past weekend. Very inspiring! Through him, I discovered the Phillips Design Probes Blog, what they refer to as "Far Future Design Research". The blog designprobes.ning.com, also has some wild concept videos like this fish-tank/hydroponics setup for your home.
